Infant cannot pinpoint the site of pain. It just cries in touching or moving that leg. If the child has fever, think of following things:Pyogenic arthritis if joint is red, swollen or tender.Abscess in soft tissues – difficult to identify if it is not yet localized.Acute phase of Poliomyelitis especially if child was not immunized.Rheumatic arthritis (in older children) if fleeting joint pain, tachycardia or murmur. If child has no fever, think ofInjury-examine carefully for fracture or contusion.Scurvy with periosteal bleeding.Ask for X-ray of the part.
